Shugu Nderitu, a Kenyan woman who has been married eight times, shared the story of her shortest union on TikTok.
Her eighth husband reportedly returned home late from watching football and demanded she wake up to cook him fresh ugali.
Nderitu said a painful past experience taught her never to tolerate disrespect, and she remains open to a ninth marriage
She had already cooked ugali and stew earlier, expecting him to warm it in the microwave when he returned, as was routine.
That night, however, the man woke her from her sleep and demanded she get up and prepare a fresh pot of ugali.
Nderitu refused, pointing out that she had already cooked and the food only needed reheating.
“I don’t usually wake up to warm his food when he returns late. I do not interfere with my sleep because he went out to have fun. So he woke me up to cook fresh ugali and I told him I had cooked the ugali a few hours ago and that it was still fresh and needed only warming,” she explained.
In an attempt to keep the peace, she got up and placed the existing ugali in the microwave. Her husband then reportedly took it out and set it on the table in rejection.
That was the moment Nderitu reached her limit. She picked it up and launched it at him, telling him he had no right to turn down food she had made after a long day of hustling, simply because he chose to stay out late.
She told him to return to her father’s house and claim back whatever dowry he had paid, because she was done. That same night, she walked out, booked herself into a hotel and later moved back to her father’s home
Nderitu also touched on a painful earlier relationship in which a man allegedly disrespected her and a child reportedly died during that period. The experience left a deep mark and shaped the way she approaches every relationship since. “I was young and naïve then, and I am not giving up on marriage, but I still refuse to allow anyone to disrespect me,” she said.
Despite everything, Nderitu remains optimistic about love and says she is already planning a ninth marriage, on her own terms.
