Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has explained why her husband, Captain Matthew Ekeinde, is responsible for buying food items at the market while she takes care of the cooking at home.
The veteran actress disclosed that her celebrity status has made it difficult for her to visit the market freely, revealing that her husband has taken up the responsibility of shopping for the family.
According to Omotola, she initially accompanied her husband on market trips during the early stages of her career but usually remained inside their vehicle while he went shopping.
However, she explained that the arrangement eventually became a security concern after someone discovered that she was inside the car during one of their outings.
Omotola said the incident prompted her husband to advise her against accompanying him to the market again, leaving him to handle the shopping on his own.
She noted that her husband is familiar with the market environment and that many traders recognise him whenever he visits to purchase food items for the family.
Despite her husband’s responsibility for shopping, the actress explained that she handles the cooking at home, describing their arrangement as an example of how couples can complement each other in marriage.
Beyond sharing details about their domestic responsibilities, Omotola used the opportunity to address what she described as a misconception about masculinity and relationships.
She argued that some men mistakenly believe that intimidating their wives, treating them poorly or suppressing their independence demonstrates strength.
According to the actress, such behaviour reflects weakness rather than genuine strength, stressing the importance of mutual respect and cooperation between partners.
Her remarks highlight her perspective that a successful marriage does not necessarily depend on rigidly defined gender roles but on how couples understand their circumstances and support one another.
Omotola’s account also challenges the traditional expectation that women should be responsible for market shopping, showing how responsibilities can be shared differently depending on a family’s needs.
The actress, widely known for her contributions to the Nigerian film industry, has been married to Matthew Ekeinde for decades.
Their marriage is often discussed in conversations about relationships, family life and maintaining a partnership while navigating the demands of public life
